How do braces straighten crooked teeth?

Braces use steady, gentle pressure over time to move teeth into their proper positions. They don't look like they're doing much just sitting there, but in fact, every moment of your orthodontic treatment at Thangam's Dental Clinic, one of the best orthodontists in Chennai, there's something happening in your mouth. The brackets we place on your teeth and the main arch wire that connects them are the two main components. The bracket is a piece of specially shaped metal or ceramic that we affix to each tooth. Then we bend the arch wire to reflect your 'ideal' bite—what we want you to look like after treatment. The wire threads through the brackets, and as the wire tries to return to its original shape, it applies pressure to actually move your teeth.

Picture your tooth resting in your jaw bone. With pressure on one side from the arch wire, the bone on the other side gives way. The tooth moves. New bone grows in behind. It may look like nothing is happening but we're making a new smile here. Thanks to new materials and procedures, all this happens much quicker than ever before. It's kind of an engineering feat.

Who can perform orthodontics?

While it is perfectly acceptable for you to receive orthodontic treatment from a dentist, many dentists prefer to refer patients to specialized orthodontists at Thangam's who are qualified in the exact field of dentistry relating to the problem.

Traditional Metal Braces

The most popular method for straightening teeth is to use traditional metal braces. They make use of wires and tiny rubber bands to link metal brackets that are affixed to the teeth. Over time, these braces gradually shift the teeth into the proper position by applying constant pressure.

Advantages:

  • Efficient at treating a range of dental issues.
  • Economical when compared to other forms of treatment.
  • Reliable and sturdy.

Best For:

  • Individuals whose teeth are severely misaligned.
  • Tough cases in orthodontics

Clear Aligners

An alternative to traditional braces that is widely used is clear aligners. Your teeth will be progressively moved into alignment by these clear, detachable trays. One of the most well-known brands of clear aligners is Invisalign.

Advantages:

  • It offers a discreet look and is hardly noticeable.
  • Removable, allowing you to eat and brush your teeth as usual.
  • With no metal wires or brackets, it's more pleasant than traditional braces.

Best For:

  • Ideal for patients looking for a low-profile treatment option
  • Alignment issues that are mild to moderate

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces work similarly to traditional braces, but they are placed on the inside of your teeth, making them barely visible from the outside. Using wires and brackets, they gradually shift your teeth into the desired position, just like conventional braces.

Advantages:

  • Completely out of sight
  • Just like traditional braces, it’s effective for treating complex dental issues.

Best For:

  • Patients who want the effectiveness of traditional braces without the visible appearance.
  • Significant alignment issues.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces work like traditional braces, but instead of elastic bands, they use clips or doors to secure the wire. These clips reduce friction, making the treatment more efficient and less painful.

Advantages:

  • More comfortable and faster than traditional braces.
  • Requires fewer adjustments by the orthodontist.
  • Easier to clean and care for.

Best For:

  • Great for those aiming for shorter treatment timelines.
  • Well-suited for addressing mild to severe dental concerns.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces have a more natural look, with clear or tooth-colored brackets that blend in with your teeth. They’re a great choice for anyone wanting effective dental alignment without the noticeable appearance of metal braces.

Advantages:

  • Stops your teeth from shifting back to their old positions.
  • Maintains the results of your orthodontic treatment.

Best For:

  • Available for all patients once they’ve completed their primary orthodontic treatment.
